A very common and sometimes extremely painful toenail problem. The toe becomes red, ‘angry’ swollen, painful and sometimes it throbs. There may be a pus discharge. Pain is easily reproduced, particularly when the toe is knocked or forced. The main problem is the presence of a spike which has punctured the flesh of the toe. Spikes appear for several reasons and include; poor nail care, improper trimming, very curved toenails, small toe box shoes, pressure and repeated trauma to the foot arising from normal activities. Pain can also occur as a result skin build under the edges of the nails. A 30-minute podiatry treatment can offer amazing pain relief. Ingrowing nails swell up as can be seen in the picture.
