Iliotibial band (friction) syndrome

The runner commonly describes an insidious sensation of tightness and burning pain over the outside of the knee.  The discomfort occurs after covering a certain distance and often occurs in runners who increase their mileage.  The Iliotibial (ITB) gets fatigued and starts to ''snap'' over the bone.  At a certain point you can run no more. Factors that can cause this problem include:

  • Poor foot function
  • Lots of downhill running.
  • Lack of pre exercise stretching
  • Prominent knee bone structure
  • Type of environment used for running.

We can help reduce the pain.  An insole (sometimes called an orthotic) may
need to be fitted to your shoes, your shoes may even need to be changed.  The clinic works very closely with Sports shoe retailers and local health professionals in order to get you back to form.
