Interdigital Pain. This causes much discomfort and can significantly affects activities of daily living. There is sometimes a swelling of the tissue surrounding the nerve. There is a nerve junction between the 3rd and 4th toe joints and this seems to be particularly vulnerable. The pain often subsides when shoes are removed. Irritation of the toe joint (usually the 2nd toe). This is common in runners. Pain is usually localised and there is tenderness in the toe joint area. If you move your toe excessively while non weight bearing this can cause much pain. Sometimes the pain radiates to the toes. Big toe joint pain. This can really upset runners. The Patient recalls experiencing significant pain under the big toe joint which increases with impact and when pushing off. When the toe is moved in a non-weight bearing position there is often discomfort.
